The Jennifer Burke Award for Innovation in Teaching and Learning

BackgroundJennifer Burke

On June 29th 2007 the Irish learning technology community lost a well known and highly regarded friend and colleague, Jennifer Burke.
From 2009, DCU and ILTA will jointly sponsor an annual award in memory of Jenn: The Jennifer Burke Award for Innovation in Teaching and Learning. The award will recognise and reward innovative practice in teaching and learning in Ireland, and in particular, will reflect and remember Jenn’s vibrancy, creativity, energy and passion for learning.
Each year the recipient of the award will be presented with a specially commissioned piece of artwork. It is intended that this piece will be displayed in the recipient’s organisation for one year.

Nomination Process

Innovation is integral to all aspects of the award process: Nominations for the award can be made in any format and we are hoping that you will be both innovative and creative in the way you make your nomination – so it’s not just another form filling exercise! However, please make sure to include the name of the nominee(s) and the context for their learning innovation idea (i.e. college, home, work,) as part of your nomination.

The award is about innovative ideas put into practice: The person or persons should be nominated on the basis of an ‘innovative idea’ that is effective in supporting learning. The ‘innovative idea’ needs to have been put into practice and have worked with a group of learners!

A nomination can be made through use of any media: The media chosen should attempt to capture and reflect the idea as originally and effectively as possible e.g. through text, video, audio or other multimedia. The name and contact details of the nominator should also be submitted with the application. It is possible to nominate yourself or a team for an award, but only one primary contact for the application should be listed for contact purposes. In the second stage of the process shortlisted candidates will be invited to present their entry to a panel of judges. A maximum of 10 minutes is allocated for the judges to review each nomination.

Evaluation Process

Nominations will be evaluated and scored as follows.

1. Level of innovation of idea (50%)
2. Potential impact of idea on learning (15%)
3. Originality of nomination submission being made (20%)
4. Quality of the nomination submission (15%)

Deadline for Submissions: Friday 13 February 2009

Nominations can be emailed or sent to the below contacts
